You will fully enjoy the wonders and beauty of Greece, but also be inspired to stretch your creativity. Did you know that you can achieve far greater photographic results in a different country than your own? Its true . . . when you are away from the familiar, creatively speaking almost anything is possible. Your senses are alive, and your appreciation of your surroundings leads you to creative excellence. This Greece Photography Tour will radically enhance your photo taking abilities!
Take a look at our itinerary below, and imagine yourself in one of the most beautiful areas on earth, and also being able to successfully PHOTOGRAPH what you see!
Day One - October 2: Athens
Welcome to Greece! Depending on your flight, you will be arriving in Athens either in the morning or early afternoon today.
Drop your bags off at our conveniently located hotel and explore the Plaka and Monastiraki for shopping and food. John Simon will lead us and Mark Hemmings will explain how to create amazing street & travel photography!
At 6:00pm we will meet on the hotel rooftop patio to get acquainted and walk to our first group meal. Mealtimes are always fun as we can discuss photography in a relaxed setting, and also enjoy fantastic Greek food.
After dinner we will head back to our hotel. You may be a bit tired from the long flight, so there will be no photography classes this evening.
Day Two - October 3: Athens (Group Lessons)
Good morning! We will all meet in the hotel lobby 8am, and then go out to a place to eat breakfast. We’ll spend a leisurely hour enjoying the morning meal talking with each other and discussing the upcoming photo opportunities. At 9am or so we will return to the hotel for the start of the day.
Today we have an interesting itinerary planned for you! For greater levels of attention to each one of your photographic needs, we will be dividing our group into two equal halves (but only for today!).
Between 9am and noon, one half of the group will spend the morning with Mark learning how to use their cameras to their fullest potential. Are you stuck on what a certain button does, or what all of the numbers and letters on your camera mean? Or maybe you use an iPhone or Android, and want to figure out how to maximize those cameras? Mark will clear up all of your questions during this morning session. The other half of the group will be visiting the Acropolis with master guide John Simon. At 9am John will take you on a fabulous tour of one of the world’s greatest treasures!
Between 12pm and 1pm Mark’s group will break for lunch, and you can sample one the delicious menus from the multitude of restaurants nearby. John’s group will also break for lunch at that time. And now for the fun part! At 1pm back at the hotel we switch groups entirely . . . Mark’s morning group will now go with John to visit the Acropolis, and John’s former group will spend the afternoon learning photography with Mark.
Why this arrangement? Mark has been teaching photography workshops annually since 2004. He knows very well that an understanding of photography comes much quicker in smaller groups. Thus Mark has perfected a group-learning technique that conveniently makes use of a professional guide, and a photographic instructor. So after lunch Mark will help the second group with any of their photography needs, and John will take his second group to the Acropolis.
We want to make sure that you get enough siesta or shopping time in, so from 4pm to 6:45pm is free time. We will meet at the hotel lobby for 6:45pm, and then head out together as a full group for a lovely meal!
After dinner Mark will be offering an optional slide presentation on the fundamentals of Photographic Composition. Mark realizes that most participants will be tired, so this slide show is completely optional. And . . . no hard feelings if you need to go to bed or instead want to explore Athen’s nightlife!
Day Three - October 4: Flight To Skiathos
In the morning we’ll all meet for breakfast and then check out of our hotel, as today is the day we leave Athens on a flight bound for Skiathos! When we arrive in Skiathos you’ll be checked- in to your lovely hotel room with stunning views of the city and the Aegean Sea.
John will lead us on an evening walk through the photogenic town, while Mark explains how to create excellent photos when the light starts to get lower in the sky.
We will all end up at a local restaurant for approximately 7pm. And after our meal back at the hotel Mark will offer an optional “Part II” of his slide presentation on composition. If you didn’t get a chance to see Part I, no problem! You will still get a lot out of the presentation.
Day Four - October 5: Skiathos Boat Cruise
Breakfast at our hotel will be at 8am as usual. As Skiathos is a town that is all about relaxing and learning how to enjoy moving slowly, after breakfast feel free to go for a stroll or just take it easy at a nearby cafe :)
Now that you are all well rested, it’s time to get out there again and have some fun. We’ll board a traditional yacht in the harbour with our Captain Konstantinos and his crew for a private cruise around the island, visiting both public and private beaches and coves.
Mark will be teaching all of you how to successfully photograph on a moving vessel, and what camera settings you need to “get the shot”. An added bonus is that Konstantinos is a chef and will prepare an awesome meal on board the boat for lunch. We’ll return to port and the end of the day with some time for a siesta, and then dinner at a restaurant for 7pm. After dinner is free time, as there will be no slide show session this evening.
Day Five - October 6: Skiathos Private Photography Lessons
This is a day that Mark is looking forward to! He is going to schedule the entire day full of individual private lessons. That’s right, you will have your own time with Mark asking him ANY question about photography that you didn’t get a chance to during the first day in Athens.
Do you have a question about the technical bells and whistles of your camera? Do you need help with Photoshop or Lightroom? Or maybe you want to maximize your iPhone photography . . . Mark’s two decades of being a pro photographer is at your disposal.
It’s rare that Mark has time for private lessons, but he is very happy to spend time with you today. So . . . write down your biggest photography or videography questions, and prepare to get them answered :)
When the time comes that we know how many participants will be on this Greece Photography Tour, will will start filling up time slots with each of the participants. The schedule for breakfast and supper will be same as previous days: 8am and 7pm. Lunch is free time for you to discover a wonderful little cafe or traditional lunch restaurant. John can help you with suggestions if you need help deciding where to go.
Day Six - October 7: Ferry To Skopelos
After our breakfast you will have free time until we leave the hotel for our next big adventure! We will board the ferry in Skiathos harbour for the brief (1 hour) ferry ride to the neighboring island of Skopelos – home to many of the scenes from the film Mamma Mia. Our ferry ride actually takes us right by the church made so famous in the movie.
Once the ferry arrives in this picturesque town we will check in to our hotel. Drink-in the view of the town and harbour from your balcony or pool deck. Or if you like, walk across the street and dip your feet in the water at the beach! Take the rest of the day to relax and explore the town, and see how many Mamma Mia scene locations you can find!
During the day Mark will be teaching photography “as we go”, explaining various techniques to get great shots on both land and the water. Don’t forget to watch the movie Mamma Mia before the trip, as we will be photographing landmarks seen in the movie.
At 6:00 pm we’ll meet at the hotel and walk to a local restaurant for a group dinner, overlooking the photogenic town harbour. Be aware, the owner may not let you order as he prides himself in offering you a large variety of local fare :)
Back at the hotel after dinner, Mark will continue his slideshow instructional series. This time it will be on Advanced Photographic Composition and Light, which will help you shoot like a pro!
Day Seven - October 8: Skopelos Boat Cruise
It’s been too long since we’ve seen Konstantinos and his crew so it’s time to get them back. They’ll pick us up in the harbour for another cruise featuring all the famous beaches on Skopelos and feeding us another feast on the traditional yacht.
Tonight Mark has a special photography lesson, and it’s all about night photography! If you own a tripod bring it along, or you can share a tripod that Mark will bring.
Day Eight - October 9: Skopelos
It’s our last full day day in this 2nd island paradise, and we have two great options for you!
#1: Rent a car or atv and head for the church of Agios Ioannis Kastri, famous for the wedding in Mamma Mia. To avoid crowds, we advise you to leave early (8:00 a.m.) since the roads are narrow, steep, and there is very little parking at the site. John will be going on this trip, and he welcomes you along if you so desire.
#2: Mark will do a morning photo walk helping people with their cameras, and pointing out technical and artistic considerations for various photographic scenes.
After lunch Mark’s group has free time to do as they like, and John’s group can explore the island more on their own or in smaller groups as they desire. We will all meet back at the hotel at a predetermined time for a lovely dinner at a local restaurant!
Back at the hotel after dinner, Mark will continue his slideshow instructional series. This time it will be on how to empower your photos with proper cropping.
Day Nine - October 10: Skopelos to Skiathos to Athens
Well it’s sad to say goodbye to these islands, but we do get to take off from a seriously short runway in Skiathos after leaving Skopelos.
On arriving in Athens, we’ll be picked up by our trusty driver and return to the hotel to decompress after some truly great days out on the islands. The remainder of the day/evening is yours to explore Athens.
Meet us on the rooftop terrace at 6pm for our final walk to a group meal. They’ll be lots to talk about and many laughs to be had. And if we’re lucky, maybe even some dancing!
Day Ten - October 11: Athens - Home
Today is the day when we board our planes for our flights home. We sincerely hope that you had a fantastic time exploring one of the world’s greatest destinations, PLUS a solid understanding on how to create amazing photographs. When you get back home and had some time to review your photos, please upload them to the Kefi site for all of us to enjoy!
Thanks again for travelling with us.
